Voice-Controlled Teleprompter: The Script Follows You, Not the Other Way Round

A constant-speed teleprompter makes you chase the text. A voice-controlled teleprompter chases you. SpeakCam listens and scrolls to the sentence you are reading; pause and it pauses, go off script for a moment and it re-locks within a few words when you come back.

Voice-following vs constant speed

  • Constant speed: a fixed pace — read faster and the text lags, slower and it runs away; you keep adjusting
  • Voice-following: recognizes where you are and scrolls there, at whatever pace you speak
  • Manual: no auto-scroll, drag with a finger — a fallback for very noisy rooms

Why misreads don’t throw it off

SpeakCam matches the recognized speech against the script phonetically rather than word for word, so a slip, an accent or a skipped word doesn’t break the lock. Skip a line or improvise and it re-syncs within a few words; start a sentence over and it jumps back to the beginning of that line with you.

Habits that make it more accurate

  • Write numbers as digits (2026, 3 o’clock) — they are recognized more reliably
  • Set the recognition language to the language you read in; if tracking is off, check this first
  • In a noisy room, switch to constant speed or manual with the “Follow” chip on the recording screen
  • Lead compensation moves the scroll 4 characters ahead by default; add a little if the text feels late

Languages

The interface comes in nine languages and the recognition language can be set separately: English, 简体中文, 繁體中文, 日本語, 한국어, Deutsch, Español, Français and Português. Recognition runs on-device whenever possible, so it works offline.

FAQ

Does a voice-controlled teleprompter need an internet connection?+

Recognition runs on-device on iPhones that support it, so no. A few older devices fall back to Apple’s server-side recognition.

The prompter doesn’t follow my voice — what should I check?+

Make sure Microphone and Speech Recognition are allowed in iOS Settings, then check that the recognition language matches your script. In a noisy room switch to constant speed or manual.

Does the prompter appear in the video?+

No. The prompter is an overlay on the viewfinder; the recording contains only you.
